A thousand trees dedicated to WYD Lisbon 2023 in Aveiro
In order to commemorate the World Tree Day, which is celebrated today, 21st March, the Diocese of Aveiro planted 1000 autochthonous trees and dedicated them to the World Youth Day (WYD) Lisbon 2023. The initiative, called "Green Afternoon WYD", has the purpose of turning the plantation area into a WYD Lisbon 2023 Green Park, after being seriously affected by the wildfires of last year.
During the initiative, Bishop António Moiteiro asked the youth to "take care of the Planet, plant trees, take care of them", appealing to all to "work so that these trees, which we plant today, grow and do not burn".
During the afternoon, 250 strawberry trees, 250 cork oaks, 250 oaks and 250 holly trees were planted. The trees were offered by Estarreja Municipal Council and by the company Navigator.
The planting carried out by the Diocese of Aveiro is also a response to the global challenge to plant trees launched by the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) for WYD Lisbon 2023 in partnership with the Global Tree Initiative (GTI), to offset part of the environmental footprint generated during the largest gathering of young people from around the world with the Pope.
After today's planting, there are now more than 7,300 trees dedicated to WYD Lisbon 2023, already planted in various parts of the world. If you want to plant a tree and dedicate it to WYD Lisbon 2023, you can find all the information here.
