Days in the Dioceses: Get to know the Diocese of Lamego
The Diocese of Lamego is one of the 17 dioceses that will receive pilgrims for the Days in the Dioceses (DND), days leading up to World Youth Day (WYD) Lisbon 2023, between 26 and 31 July.
Located in the northern region of Portugal, the Diocese of Lamego has about 105,000 inhabitants and is divided into six pastoral zones, with 14 Archpriestates and 223 parishes. This Diocese presents a unique characteristic in Portugal, since the city of its seat is not the capital of a District, which gives it great relevance.
The Diocese of Lamego stands out for its historical and cultural heritage, and there are many monuments you can visit, such as the Cathedral, or the Church of São Pedro de Balsemão. If you are not tired yet, you can still climb the 686 steps of the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios or go to the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Lapa, which offers a panoramic view of the city. You can also walk through the Montemuro Mountains, as well as visit the Castle of Penedono and the Rupestrian Engravings of Foz Côa.
The vineyards mark the landscape in the Diocese of Lamego, where the well-known Port wine is produced. In Lamego you can venture to the vineyards, enjoy a tasting of local wines or simply explore the natural landscapes of the region.
In addition, the Diocese of Lamego is full of traditions and customs, being known for its religious festivals, including the Festa de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios. Also for food lovers, this is a place not to be missed, as it presents a variety of traditional dishes. Among the best known are wild rabbit, roast kid, smoked ham, pork sausages and "Lamegos". We cannot fail to mention the varied offer of fresh and tasty fruit.
