Lamego hosts pilgrims one year after receiving WYD Symbols
Precisely one year after the passage of the Symbols of World Youth Day (WYD) through the Diocese of Lamego, the pilgrims have begun to arrive with great enthusiasm. In total, the diocese will welcome more than a thousand young people of different nationalities.
Luís Rafael, Coordinator of the Diocesan Organising Committee (COD) of Lamego, in an interview with Agência Ecclesia said that the Days in the Dioceses are an opportunity for "families to meet with young people". These young people come from Malaysia, Singapore, the United States, Cape Verde, Lithuania and Germany. Besides living with the Host Families, the parish priest says that the DNDs are a "different experience", which will allow pilgrims to have a "broad image of Portugal, from the interior to the big city".
On 26 July, the day of the pilgrims' welcome, the families prepared a social dinner with the young people, making known not only the gastronomy, but also the Portuguese popular music. Part of the Diocese of Lamego's programme for this week is an immersion in "tradition", through visits to the main monuments and sparkling wine cellars in the region, in "culture", inviting young people to participate in traditional games and contact with "nature", taking advantage of the "tranquillity" of this Diocese, as Father Luís Rafael points out.
On 31 July, pilgrims and locals will once again gather for the sending-off celebration, ready to begin the week of World Youth Day (WYD) Lisbon 2023.
