WYD Lisbon 2023 challenges pilgrims to plant trees worldwide
To mark the World Day of Nature Conservation, celebrated on July 28th, the World Youth Day (WYD) Lisbon 2023 Foundation established a partnership with the Global Tree Initiative (GTI), and together they launched a global tree planting challenge that aims to alert about biodiversity, climate change and their effects.
With this partnership, the aim is to encourage the population towards beneficial environmental practices, boosting community behaviors that contribute to reduce the loss of biodiversity and the effects of climate change.
To reinforce its commitment with sustainability, WYD Lisbon 2023 and GTI will challenge pilgrims from all over the world, who sign up for the journey, to plant trees in community for the WYD Lisbon 2023. Volunteers, people who are part of the organization of WYD Lisbon 2023 and all the community in general will also be challenged to plant trees until August 2023, in that way the World Youth Day could leave a lasting positive legacy.
With the support of GTI, which will provide educational material and a tree planting guide, as well as access to the list of planted trees, WYD Lisbon 2023 will offset part of the environmental footprint generated by the activities related to this organization. Trees planted on the GTI global map celebrate universal brotherhood for a more sustainable planet.
The WYD Lisbon 2023 wants to becomes a reference in the global commitment towards sustainability and leave behind “a positive and long-lasting legacy for the general community, the organizing comity, the partners, the volunteers, and the pilgrims.” – remember here the Letter of Commitment to Sustainability of WYD Lisbon 2023, released in April this year.
