St. Bartholomew of the Martyrs
Saint Bartholomew of the Martyrs was born in Lisbon in 1514, and at the age of 14 he entered the Dominican Order in that city. He was ordained bishop in 1559 and on that same year received the pallium of Archbishop of Braga. He participated in the third and last stage of the Council of Trent (1562-1563). He died on July 16, 1590, recognized and acclaimed by the people as the “holy archbishop, father of the poor and the sick”. He was canonized by Pope Francis in 2019. His feast day is celebrated on July 18.
Sandal
The archbishop who toured the region of the archdiocese of Braga in the sixteenth century, did so by mule or on foot, so the sandal is a symbol of dedication to his people and a relic of veneration.
Prayer
Lord,
who endowed Blessed Saint Bartholomew of the Martyrs
with great apostolic charity,
always protect your Church so that,
like him, we too may be glorious in our pastoral life,
always fervent in your love
in ecclesial commitment since our youth.
Through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
