St. Anthony
St. Anthony was born in Lisbon in 1195. While still a teenager, he entered the Convent of the Canons Regular of St. Augustine in that city. In 1220 he moved to the Franciscan friary of Coimbra. He participated in the General Chapter held in Assisi in 1221, where he met Francis of Assisi. This distinguished preacher died on June 13, 1231, the day on which we celebrate his liturgical feast. He was buried in Padua. Less than a year after the anniversary of his death, he was canonized by Pope Gregory IX.

Prayer
Almighty and eternal God,
who through St. Anthony gave to Your people
an outstanding preacher of the Gospel
and a powerful intercessor before You,
grant that, with his help,
we may faithfully follow the teachings of the Christian life
and merit Your protection in the face of every adversity.
We entrust to St. Anthony the World Youth Day
that will take place in the city where he was born.
Through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
