Portuguese Fado singer sings Fado “Foi Deus”
On this Thursday, August 3rd, Mariza performed in Pope Francis’ Welcome Ceremony. Thousands of young pilgrims, from numerous countries, had reunited to welcome the Holy Father, in the context of the World Youth Day Lisbon 2023, and watched the Ensemble 23, which gathered Portuguese and foreign artists.
Mariza is one of the Portuguese Fado singers with most recognition, and has grown sharply over the last 12 years. Several concerts, either in Portugal or abroad, make Fado known worldwide.
That was precisely what happened during yesterday’s afternoon. The Portuguese Fado singer took the stage to perform “Foi Deus”, a Fado song composed originally by Amália Rodrigues in 1952. During the performance, there was a total silence which, at the end, was interrupted by thousands of applauses, which Pope Francis also joined with a smile.
After performing, the Portuguese singer revealed herself very emotional because of the “big love’s blister” which is evident in World Youth Day (WYD) Lisbon 2023. She also pointed out that, nowadays, “this is what the world needs”. Having the global vision of the young crowd “united for love, for peace, for hope”, in what is the biggest meeting of young people with the Pope, led her to the certainty that is a “reunion of love”, the Fado singer said.
